Surrendering your pet to shhs
Notice: We are not taking in any animals of any kind due to a lack of space.
Surrendering a pet is never an easy decision. But if you are no longer able to care for your pet, we are here to help.
Please call (262) 694-4047 in advance to discuss before bringing us your pet. All owner surrenders must be scheduled by appointment. Safe Harbor can be reached at (262) 694-4047, 7 days a week, between the hours of 9am-5pm (excluding major holidays) to schedule an appointment. In order to focus on our busiest adoption times, we do not schedule surrender appointments on the weekends.
Our primary service area is Kenosha County and Union Grove. Please understand that we have limited space. In order to give every single animal the best chance at finding a new, happy home, we may have to schedule the appointment a few days to a few weeks later, or you may be told we are full and have no room to help you if you are unable to wait. We regret SHHS cannot help every animal.
Pet overpopulation is still a problem, and the animals in our service area must be our first priority if we are to effectively meet our mission to save lives and reduce unnecessary suffering. SHHS will accept returns from any jurisdiction if the animal was adopted from Safe Harbor. If you live outside of our service area unfortunately we are unable to help you at this time. You will be asked to call your community designated shelter. A list of several local shelters has been provided below:
Racine County, WI WI Humane Society Racine: 262-554-6699
Walworth County, WI Lakeland Animal Shelter: (262) 723-1000
Lake County, IL Lake County Animal Control: 847-377-4700 Save A Pet: 847-740-7788 Orphans of the Storm:847-945-0235
After calling, and if you are told we can assist you, please download and complete a surrender form below and bring your pet along with all available veterinarian records and proof of residency.
Kenosha County and Union Grove residents will be charged a $100 surrender fee to help pay for your animal’s care dependent upon the circumstance and animals needs. (The average animal costs SHHS $450 to re-home.) If your pet has serious health or behavior problems that will make re-homing not possible, we will talk with you about the owner-requested euthanasia process. For the privacy of adopters and animal rescue partners we do not release specific outcome information.
