If you are missing an animal, please contact the shelter immediately to fill out a lost report. You can also do so online by visiting here. Safe Harbor accepts animals 24 hours a day and seven days a week. While we do our best to look through all of our lost reports as new animals arrive, it is the responsibility of the owner to keep checking to see if their animal has come in as many animals have a similar description. The state of Wisconsin requires a 4 day stray hold, and after this time the animal becomes property of Safe Harbor and can be put up for adoption. It is incredibly important to continue checking with us to see if your pet has come in. You can always call the shelter at 262-694-4047. If we do not answer, please leave a message we will get back to you as soon as possible and check our voicemail several times a day.
**Please also check our available animals pages (under Adopt tab) if your pet has been missing for a few days/weeks their stray period may be up and they may have become available for adoption. If you see your pets listed here please call us at 262-694-4047**
What to do if your pet has gone missing?
Make sure to let your friends and neighbors know. Often pets do not wander far from home.
Contact local vets and humane societies right away. If people find stray animals these are the first places they are brought.
Contact your local non-emergency police. These are the people that pick up any stray animals.
Contact Lost Dogs of Wisconsinhere or Lost Cats of Wisconsin here. Both organizations have extensive volunteer connections throughout the state and are in close contact with humane societies.
When your pet is found please consider microchipping them. This is the easiest way to return pets to their owners. Safe Harbor will microchip your pet at anytime during open hours for $25.
What if I find an animal?
Check with your neighbors. Often pets do not wander far from home.
If you feel comfortable, bring the animal to a veterinary clinic or humane society so they can be scanned for a microchip. If you do not feel comfortable contact your local non-emergency police to pick up an animal. The Kenosha non-emergency line is 262-656-1234. Safe Harbor is able to take any stray animals from Kenosha County (with the exception of the Town of Brighton) or Union Grove. If the animal is found outside of Kenosha County you will need to contact your local humane society.
Call Safe Harbor to fill out a Found Report at 262-694-4047. We will check with our lost reports to see if an animal matching that description has gone missing.
Safe Harbor is unable to go and pick up stray animals.
**Please visit our Stray Animal Pick Up page for more stray animal contact information if you are outside of the city of Kenosha**
