Who We Are
Safe Harbor Humane Society (aka Kenosha County Humane Society) is the only open admissions animal shelter in Kenosha County, Wisconsin. We care for those animals that are lost, neglected, abused, abandoned, and homeless. Each year we care for over 3,000 animals.
We strive to provide the best possible care to all the animals within our facility. Since 2011 we have had a veterinarian on staff to ensure the medical needs of all our animals are met. We alter every cat and dog prior to adoption as well as make sure they are up to date on vaccines and microchipped. Our mission is to find loving and permanent homes for all our animals!
Established in 1916, Safe Harbor Humane Society has taken on many forms. Starting off as a humane society with the purpose of preventing abuse, cruelty and neglect of both children and animals, Safe Harbor quickly became Kenosha's pet sanctuary. Throughout the years, Safe Harbor transitioned into the City of Kenosha's holding facility for lost and abandoned pets and was incorporated as a Humane Society in the early 60s. By the early 80s, we took ownership of our current property and began building our shelter on the property nearly 30 years ago!
In Fall of 2011, we opened our veterinary clinic to ensure exceptional care for each of our animals. Shortly after, we began monthly low-cost vaccine clinics to help defray the cost of pet ownership. We are also proud to offer low-cost spay neuter surgeries to help cut down on pet overpopulation in our area. In the fall of 2015 we expanded our lobby and office areas as well as added two free-roaming cat rooms to ensure our cats are living their highest quality of life. The additional lobby space has allowed us to offer more educational programs and tours to the public.
In 2019, our shelter will be embarking on our largest renovation yet--expanding our dog room. The dog kennel areas in our building are original to the 1980s facility and are in desperate need of update. The renovation/expansion will triple the size of our dog kennels giving the dogs more space while they are here. The new kennels will also provide for better interactions between the dogs and public by decreasing the noise and echo of barks. We are looking to modernize our isolation area for ill and new dogs to keep them separated from the healthy animals. Our new back area will feature a foster room specifically for animals that are too young to be with the general population and will also feature a mini grooming and bathing station for use by our volunteers. Finally we are excited to finally add an indoor interaction space for dogs and potential families. Keep a close eye on our Facebook Page for more updates!
Today we are proud to offer many public services including low cost spay/neuter, low cost vaccine clinics, TNR/barn cat placement, flea/tick/heartworm preventative, pet licenses, and pet retail items to ensure your furry friend has everything they need. Call us if you have any other animal related questions!
