Who We Are
Safe Harbor Humane Society (aka Kenosha County Humane Society) is the animal shelter for all of Kenosha County, Wisconsin. We are an open-admission facility, accepting all domestic animals that are unwanted, neglected, or found within our county.
We took in over 3,200 animals in 2015 and expect to take in that many in 2016. We strive to provide the best possible care to all the animals within our facility. Since 2011 we have had a veterinarian on staff to ensure the medical needs of all our animals are met. We alter every cat and dog prior to adoption as well as make sure they are up to date on vaccines and microchipped. Our mission is to find loving and permanent homes for all our animals!
Established in 1916, Safe Harbor Humane Society has taken on many forms. Starting off as a humane society with the purpose of preventing abuse, cruelty and neglect of both children and animals, Safe Harbor quickly became Kenosha's pet sanctuary. Throughout the years, Safe Harbor transitioned into the City of Kenosha's holding facility for lost and abandoned pets and was incorporated as a Humane Society in the early 60s. By the early 80s, we took ownership of our current property and began building our shelter on the property nearly 30 years ago!
In Fall of 2011, we opened our veterinary clinic to ensure exceptional care for each of our animals. Shortly after, we began bi-monthly low-cost vaccine clinics to help defray the cost of pet ownership. In the fall of 2015 we expanded our lobby and office areas as well as added two free-roaming cat rooms to ensure our cats are living their highest quality of life. We are now proud to offer many public services including low-cost spay/neuter procedures, offer pet licenses, and offer low cost pet retail to ensure that your furry friends have everything they need. Stop by today to visit all our pets and see what we have to offer!
