SHHS Volunteer Association:
If you are interested in helping our fury residents, here's some information on how to get started. To become a member of the Safe Harbor Humane Society Volunteer Association, you need to come to Safe Harbor and fill out a volunteer contact information form. You will be contacted when the next set of orientation dates are scheduled. They are usually done at the beginning of the month. You will need to attend one of the sessions. After wards, you will be given an application to fill out. Our volunteer coordinator will review each application and contact you once you are approved. After you have been notified, you will be an official member of the Safe Harbor Humane Society Volunteer Association. There will be multiple positions available:
All volunteers must be 16 years of age or older and complete an application at the shelter before volunteering. After your application has been reviewed, you will be contacted and scheduled an orientation. Volunteers under 18 will need a parent/guardian signature.

Do you enjoy playing and walking with dogs? Dog Walkers volunteer by interacting with SHHS dogs on a one-on-one basis by walking them around the property, playing fetch inside the pens and brushing/combing them. Many of these animals have been surrendered by their owners for various reasons or have been turned into us as strays. They all need human interaction, to feel cared for and loved. Even though our staff treats them well, we don’t always have enough time to spend with each one, so your time with them is much needed.
Cat Socialization Aide
Are you a cat person? Cat Socialization Aides volunteer by playing with cats, brushing or combing them and helping them feel loved and secure until they can be adopted to a new and permanent home. Once again, our staff does not always have enough time to devote to each individual animal, so your interaction makes a huge difference in these precious lives.
Do you enjoy talking with people? Guests arriving at our shelter are often unsure of where to turn. We are looking for smiling faces to greet our guests as they walk in and direct them accordingly. Greeter training is done as requested and interested candidates should call to schedule a specific training time after attending a general information session.
Do you pride yourself on your organizational skills? Volunteers with an attention to detail are encouraged to assist with filing, mailing projects, and assembly of our animal care folders. Those with data entry experience might be asked to help out with a more specialized project. Training for this volunteer opportunity is done as requested and interested candidates should call to schedule a specific training time after attending a general information session.
Shelter Maintenance Aide
Shelter Maintenance Aides volunteer by offering plumbing, electrical, general maintenance, landscaping and/or any other specialty work. We are often in need of these skills but cannot always afford to pay for them.
Shelter Fundraising Aide
Shelter Fundraising Aide volunteer by helping at fundraising events. Because we are a nonprofit organization, SHHS is always fundraising for money to provide a good temporary home for our animals. There are approximately 6 fundraising events each year and it is vital to have reliable and punctual volunteers to make each one successful.

PetSmart Adoption Representative
Safe Harbor cats actually live at PetSmart until they are adopted. This does require a time commitment and involves showing cats to potential adopters and walking them through the adoption process and/or cleaning cages throughout the week and on weekends. Training for this volunteer opportunity is done as requested and interested candidates should call to schedule a specific training time after attending a general information session.
PetSmart/Petco Adoption Representative (weekends)
As a PetSmart/Petco Adoption Representative volunteer by picking up cats from SHHS at 9:30am and transporting them to either PetSmart or Petco to give possible adopters a chance to see them and get adoption information from 10am to 2pm. All paperwork is handled through SHHS. Training for this volunteer opportunity is done as requested and interested candidates should call to schedule a specific training time after attending a general information session.
If you are interested in volunteering at one of our Petsmart locations, please contact the shelter for Kenosha area or Therese Williams at 847-356-8746 for Gurnee.
Pet Foster Parent
Do you have extra room and time to foster a pet? SHHS needs temporary foster homes for mama cats who are pregnant or who have just had a litter of kittens and cannot be adopted out until they are 8 weeks of age. We also need temporary homes for dogs going through heartworm treatment, amputations, etc. Become a Pet Foster Parent
